Here's the short yet powerful report from the excellent Ambient that we were able to enhance with some data from our Homeowner Electrification Tracker Survey (HETS). It shows that, to accelerate the energy transition, homeowners need to plan their switch to heat pumps. However, our data shows that most homeowners won't plan ahead; they'll hold out until their boilers break down—probably in winter when the boiler is working under stress and everyone at home is freezing. An emergency plumber is normally called and the easiest and fastest solution is likely to be replacing the old unit with a new gas boiler. This is how a typical distressed purchase happens. Distressed purchases are a very major block to the growth of heat pumps. We need to be more proactive in planning the energy transition!
Planning could make things so much smoother. If heat pump installers and energy companies could contact homeowners with very old boilers and help them plan the switch to heat pumps (e.g., by offering pre-emptive site surveys), homeowners could avoid an impending crisis. But how to identify those with old boilers? The answer is to open up the Gas Safe Register which lists the type and age of every boiler. That's the key point of this Ambient report. It's an easy, effective, and affordable solution that will help accelerate the transition to fully electrified, sustainable homes. Electrify Research was delighted to contribute to this report by providing key homeowner data. If you're involved in the supply of heat pumps, solar, or EVs, also check out our HETS study—it will make your planning much easier. Ambient's report is here https://lnkd.in/ehediJXv
